Terms & refunds

Last updated 6 August 2026. Written to be read, not to be survived.

1. Who you are dealing with

Kept in Print is not a company. It is made and run by one person — Shaun, in Durban, South Africa — trading in his own name. There is no support desk and no queue: every message is read and answered by the person who wrote the code.

Write to us through the contact page. It reaches him directly, usually the same day and always within two. If two days pass with no reply, something has broken at our end — send it again and it will get through.

Kept in Print is an independent product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to WhatsApp or Meta Platforms, Inc.

2. What Kept in Print does

Kept in Print turns a chat export that you provide into a book you can read on a screen or have printed. You upload the export file, arrange the book in your browser, and download the result.

Building and previewing a book is free, and always will be. The free download is the complete book — every page, every photo, every voice note — with a faint “Made with Kept in Print” mark on each page and a small line on the cover. Nothing is hidden, blurred or cut short.

3. What you are paying for

Print-ready files is a one-time payment for one book. It removes the mark and unlocks the print-ready files. It is not a subscription, there is nothing to cancel, and we will never charge you again for the same book.

Print-ready files is attached to your account, not to the device you bought it on. You can clear your browser, change your phone, and download your book again by signing in.

Prices are shown before you pay, in your own currency where we can. If a price on the site is wrong, we will honour the price you were shown at checkout.

4. Your chat belongs to you

You keep every right to your own conversation. Uploading it does not give us any ownership of it, any licence to use it, or any right to show it to anyone.

Please only upload chats you were actually part of. Everyone in a conversation has a stake in it; we ask you to think about the other people in yours before you print it.

5. What we keep, and for how long

Your chat is read and laid out in your browser. To print the book we send the finished pages to our servers, because a phone cannot typeset three hundred pages on its own.

Those files are deleted as soon as your book reaches you. If something goes wrong partway — a failed render, a closed tab — an automatic sweep removes whatever is left within 48 hours, in every case. We do not keep a copy, we do not sell your content, we do not share it, and nobody here reads it.

We keep as little as we can for as short a time as we can, specifically so that there is never a store of other people’s private lives sitting on our side.

Unless you ask us to keep one. A book you have paid for can be kept in your library, so you can download it again on another phone or after you have lost the file. That is a choice you make, in words, each time you download — it is off unless you turn it on, it applies to that one book and no other, and nothing you have not ticked is ever stored. A kept book is private: it has no public address at all and can only be opened by your own signed-in account. One press removes it, immediately and for good.

The one exception is the Heirloom edition, which is hand-bound and printed exactly once. That edition is proofread end to end by a single person before it goes to press, because a mistake in it could never be corrected. This is the only tier where a human being reads a page, it is stated plainly on the Heirloom page, and you choose it deliberately. The files are destroyed after sealing.

We do keep the ordinary things needed to run an account: your email address, and a record of what you have bought. If you ask us to delete your account, we delete it.

6. Refunds

Print-ready files carries a 30-day money-back guarantee. No questions, no forms, no conditions. Tell us through the contact page, from the email address on your account, within 30 days of paying, and we will refund you in full.

You do not have to return anything, delete anything, or explain yourself. It is a file you made out of your own words — asking for it back would be meaningless.

Refunds go back to the card or account you paid from, through Paystack. We process them within 3 working days of your email; how long it then takes to appear is up to your bank, and is usually 5 to 10 working days.

If your book will not build, will not download, or comes out wrong, tell us before you ask for a refund if you can bear it — we would much rather fix it. But the guarantee does not depend on giving us that chance.

Printed editions are not on sale yet. When they are, they will carry their own terms, because a printed object cannot be un-printed: damaged or misprinted books will be reprinted and reshipped free, and a personalised book that has been made correctly cannot be returned for a change of mind.

7. While Kept in Print is in beta

Kept in Print is new and is being built by one person. During the beta, features may change, break, or briefly disappear. We will not charge you for something that is not working.

Projects you are working on are saved in your browser, not on our servers, and are cleared after 7 days. Download your finished book, and save the project file if you want to come back to it. We cannot recover a project that your browser has cleared.

8. What we cannot promise

We try very hard, and we will not pretend to certainty. Chat exports vary between phones, between app versions and between languages, and some things are simply not in the file: deleted messages, disappearing messages, anything sent as “view once”. Elsewhere the judgement is ours — which side of a page a photo belongs on, how a long voice note should sit.

Look through every page in the preview before you send anything to a print shop. What you see there is the book exactly as it will print. We cannot be responsible for printing costs you incur on a book you have not checked.

To the extent the law allows, our liability to you is limited to what you paid us. None of this affects rights you have under the Consumer Protection Act that cannot be signed away.

9. Things you may not do

Do not upload conversations you were not part of. Do not use Kept in Print to harass, impersonate or expose anyone. Do not attempt to break, overload or work around the service. We may suspend an account that does these things, and we will refund anything unused if we do.

10. Changes, and the law that applies

If we change these terms we will change the date at the top, and we will not apply a change backwards to a purchase you have already made.

These terms are governed by the law of the Republic of South Africa. If something goes wrong between us, please use the contact page first — we would rather sort it out ourselves than have anyone go to the trouble of a dispute.
