Fold a zine out of one sheet

The fold, in words

The output is two sheet-sides; the magic is four moves:

  1. Print both sides, short-edge flipSide 1 then side 2, actual size. The duplex flip is what makes the insides of the cells land where the fold needs them.
  2. Fold right half over left, then top down over bottomTwo folds, that order. You now have a quarter-size stack whose four layers are two nested "sheets" — the left column wrapping the right.
  3. One cut, the folded edge on the rightThrough all layers, the vertical fold only. This opens the nesting that the next move needs.
  4. The top fold is the spineOpen the cut edge and the zine collapses into itself: 8 pages in order, held shut by nothing but its own geometry.

Questions people actually ask

Does my PDF get uploaded anywhere?

No. The layout is built in your browser's memory and handed back as a download. Zines are frequently personal; they stay on your machine.

Exactly 8 pages?

That is what two folds and one cut give. Fewer is fine — the tool pads with blanks that fold inside. More wants the booklet imposer and a staple, or several zines stapled as chapters, which is a proud tradition.

What page size should my 8 pages be?

The finished zine is a quarter of the sheet — A4 sheet gives A6-ish pages. Work at the finished size (A6 portrait for an A4 sheet) and the scaling takes care of itself: the sheet is exactly two-by-two of your page.

The classic slit version — same thing?

Same family, different geometry: the classic cuts a slit and collapses rather than cutting a fold open. This variant is easier to verify by eye (print the test zine) and just as fast to make; the zine you can fold confidently beats the one you fold twice.
