How many pages is that many words?
"How many pages is 5,000 words" is a deadline question and a print quote, and the honest answer is a typesetting decision — so the presets are named trims with real words-per-page figures and the box is editable if you know your leading. Then the chain runs further than the plain converters: pages → sheets → spine → weight, the same models the rest of this shop uses, ending where the printer's conversation starts.
Blank uses the preset's 320. Leading, margins and type size all move this — set it if you know yours.

Words per page is a choice, not a constant
The presets measure real books: a 6×9 trade novel at 11/14 type lands near 320 words a page; A4 double-spaced manuscript format is 250; large print is 200. Same manuscript, three different books. If your typesetter has set a sample spread, its count overrides every preset here — that is what the override box is for, and using it is the mark of taking the print quote seriously.
| Manuscript | Trade 6×9 | A4 double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 5,000 words — a long essay | 16 pages | 20 pages |
| 50,000 words — a short novel | 157 pages | 200 pages |
| 80,000 words — a novel | 250 pages | 320 pages |
| 120,000 words — a doorstop | 375 pages | 480 pages |
Rounded to whole pages, and every one of them then has a spine width and a weight — the tool carries the chain.
Questions people actually ask
Why does my word processor disagree?
It is telling you pages at ITS page size and type — usually A4 or Letter at word-processor leading. Switch the preset to match it and the numbers reconcile, then switch to the book's trim to see the truth.
Do front matter and chapters add pages?
Yes — title page, copyright, contents, and chapter openings starting on fresh rectos all add real pages. Figure 4–8 pages of front matter plus one per chapter opening for a typical book.
How many words is a normal book?
Novels run 70,000–100,000; novellas 20,000–50,000; non-fiction wanders anywhere. The reading-time line gives you the even more honest unit: evenings.
What's the words-per-page for children's books or poetry?
So variable that a preset would be a lie — picture books are pictures with sentences, poetry is whitespace with lines. Set the override from a set sample and trust nobody's average, including ours.
