How many pages will my WhatsApp chat be?
There is no formula, because it depends far more on how you text than on how long you have been texting. As a rough guide, a year of steady daily chatting tends to land in the low hundreds of A5 pages. Photo-heavy chats run much longer; chats of one-word replies run shorter than anyone expects. Your exact count takes about ten seconds and costs nothing.
Rough page counts
| How long you've been chatting | Typical messages | Roughly, in A5 pages |
|---|---|---|
| A holiday or a first month | 500 – 2,000 | 20 – 80 |
| Six months, steady | 3,000 – 8,000 | 80 – 200 |
| A year, steady | 8,000 – 20,000 | 150 – 400 |
| A year, long distance | 20,000 – 40,000 | 300 – 700 |
| Several years | 40,000+ | Multiple volumes |
| An active group chat, one year | 30,000+ | Multiple volumes |
These are ranges, not promises, and the spread inside each row is enormous. Two couples with identical message counts can differ threefold in pages, entirely because of photographs.
What actually moves the number
Photographs, by a mile
A photo occupies far more page than the sentence around it. A chat that is 30% images can run double the length of a text-only chat with the same message count. This is the dominant variable and it is not close.
How you break your sentences
People who send. one. thought. per. message. produce far more bubbles than people who write a paragraph, for identical content. Rapid-fire texters get longer books.
Voice notes
Each takes a bubble with a waveform and its duration, so a chat full of them sits between text and photos for density. How they get onto the page.
Group size
More participants means more avatars, more sender names and more short interjections. Groups are the longest books made here. Exporting one.
Page size
A6 is roughly half an A5 page, so it roughly doubles the count. A4 nearly halves it and reads like a report. A5 is the usual choice because it reads like a book.
Dark mode — not really
It barely changes the page count. It changes the price, because ink covers the whole sheet. Why dark pages cost more.
When a chat becomes several volumes
Past roughly 350 pages, a single book stops being a good object. A perfect-bound block that thick will not open flat, the inner margin swallows the text, and the spine cracks the first time somebody forces it. So longer chats are split into a matching, numbered set of volumes of around 350 pages each — divided at sensible points, numbered on the spine, and designed to sit together on a shelf. (Curious what your count means in millimetres of spine? The spine calculator does that arithmetic for any page count and paper — it is the same model that sizes these covers.)
Each volume is priced as its own book, which means you can start with volume one and add the rest later; they will still match. And if your export came back shorter than your history because of WhatsApp’s message cap, that is worth solving before you commit to a set, not after.
Page count drives price, so the two questions are really one:
- Print-ready files
- R349one payment, one book
- The whole book, free
- R0every page, faint mark across it
Your exact number depends on how long your chat is. Slide the calculator to your chat’s size, or drop your export in and let the studio count the pages for free.
If the number comes back bigger than your budget, the usual moves are: print a date range rather than everything, choose softcover over hardcover, choose light pages over dark, or buy the file and have a shop near you bind it. The full breakdown with a slider is on the cost page.
Questions people actually ask
How many pages is a year of WhatsApp messages?
Usually somewhere between 150 and 400 A5 pages for steady daily chatting, and considerably more for a long-distance relationship or a photo-heavy chat. The variation between two chats of the same length is large enough that estimating is not much use — the free studio gives you the exact count in seconds.
Does the page count include photos?
Yes. Photos, stickers and video stills are typeset into the conversation where they were sent, and they are the single biggest influence on how long a book runs.
What happens if my chat is too long for one book?
It becomes a matching numbered set of volumes of roughly 350 pages each, split for you. Each volume is priced as its own book and you can order them one at a time — they still match on the shelf.
Can I print just part of my chat?
Yes. Set a date range before the book is built. Printing one year rather than seven is how most anniversary books are made.
Which page size should I choose?
A5 for most books — it reads like a paperback and keeps the bubbles at a comfortable size. A6 is pocket-sized and roughly doubles the page count. A4 nearly halves it but reads like a document rather than a keepsake.
