WhatsApp chat book services, compared
Five routes exist: zapptales, My Forever Books, Chatella, Kept in Print (us), and doing it yourself for nothing. This page states what we could verify and marks what we could not. The single question that sorts them fastest is not price — it is where you live, because shipping decides this purchase more often than the book does.
The whole category, one table
| Chat apps | Voice notes | Free version | Published price | Verified? | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| zapptales | Six | QR code, paid add-on | Preview | From €32.90 / €35.90, first 100 pages | Their pricing page, 9 Aug 2026 |
| My Forever Books | Nine | QR code, included | None | $59 / $109 flat, to 400 / 800 pages | Read directly, 9 Aug 2026 |
| Chatella | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified | Site would not respond | |
| Kept in Print | WhatsApp only | Printed waveform | Whole book, marked | Calculator | This is us |
| Do it yourself | Any you can export | A line of text | Free | Paper and binding | How |
Chatella is a real service in this category and appears throughout the search results for it; its site refused connection when we tried to check it on 9 August 2026, so rather than repeat unverified figures we have left the row blank. That is not a judgement on them. Competitor figures were read from their own published pages on 9 August 2026 and are quoted for comparison, not as a live quote — zapptales pricing and My Forever Books. Prices change; check theirs before you decide. If you find something here that is out of date, tell us and we will fix it.
Sort by where you live, not by price
Europe
zapptales ships domestically and has done it a quarter of a million times. Unless you specifically object to QR-coded voice notes, this is the path of least resistance — and if you are only here because you wanted options, the honest list of zapptales alternatives says where each one wins.
United States and Canada
My Forever Books, and the flat page allowances are unusually generous on a long chat. Count your pages first — the answer flips at around 400.
Africa, South Asia, South-East Asia, Latin America
Freight will very likely exceed the book, and import duty is charged to you on arrival. Buy a print-ready file and bind it locally. True whoever you buy the file from, and the single most useful sentence on this page — how to hand it to a shop, or the South African version if that is where you are.
Anywhere, but it has to be perfect
Nobody in this category hand-binds. If the book is for a funeral, a fiftieth anniversary or a single irreplaceable occasion, the Heirloom is the only tier of its kind here — and it is $499, which is either obviously worth it or obviously not.
Four questions that separate them
- Is your chat actually on WhatsApp? If not, only zapptales and My Forever Books can help you.
- How many pages? Flat-fee services win on very long chats; page-banded ones win on short ones. Get the number first — it is free and it takes seconds, and it changes the answer.
- Do the voice notes matter? If they are the reason you are doing this, read this before you buy anything. It is the one real structural difference in the category.
- Do you need to see it first? Only one service here shows you the entire finished book before taking money, and WhatsApp exports fail in enough ways — truncation, missing media — that this is a practical concern rather than a nicety.
So which should you pick?
There is no best one, which is why this page has a table instead of a winner. Europe and a parcel: zapptales. A huge chat and a US address: My Forever Books. Outside those, and on WhatsApp: buy the file and bind it near you. And whatever you choose — do it now rather than when the phone is lost. The commonest outcome in this category is not a bad book; it is no book, because someone meant to get round to it.
Questions people actually ask
Which WhatsApp chat book service is cheapest?
It depends on page count and destination, and shipping usually decides it. For very long chats the flat-allowance services can win outright. Outside Europe and North America the cheapest good outcome is normally a print-ready file bound by a local shop.
Are these services safe with my messages?
Read each retention policy rather than trusting a summary. The relevant questions are how long your chat is stored, whether any human reads it, and whether long-term cloud storage is being sold to you as a feature.
Can I make a WhatsApp chat book for free?
You can produce the pages for free — Kept in Print's whole book is free with a faint mark on each page, and you can export and print a plain transcript with no service at all. Binding a physical book always costs something, because paper and a bindery do.
Do any of them work with iMessage?
zapptales and My Forever Books do. Kept in Print does not — it reads WhatsApp exports only.
What is the difference between all these services, really?
Three things: how many chat apps they read, what they do with voice notes and videos, and whether you buy a file or a parcel. Almost every other difference is presentation.
