Screenshots: fine, up to a point
For a birthday card, a framed exchange, one perfect message — screenshot it and print it at any photo counter. It is free, immediate and looks exactly like the phone, which is sometimes the entire point. Printing the transcript: correct for records

The keepsake: what actually has to happen
It has to be readable at length
Bubbles, sensible margins, real type. A book someone reads for an hour has different requirements from a screen someone glances at, and a screenshot fails all of them at page 40.
The media has to be in place
Photos where they were sent, stickers where they were sent, voice notes visible as something rather than absent. Otherwise half the conversation is gone — what to do when they are missing.
It has to be bound to a real size
