What actually moves the price
How long your chat is
Books are priced in page bands — a 120-page summer costs less to print than a 600-page history. Your exact count comes from the free studio the moment you drop your WhatsApp export in.
The binding
Softcover is light and cheaper to post. Hardcover is cloth over board — the one that looks like a book on a shelf, and the one people gift. Both are bound by hand here in Durban, on matte-coated 140gsm, glued double-fan so the pages open flat instead of fighting you; see all three editions for what each is like to hold.
Light or dark pages
Dark mode looks the way your chat looked at 2am — and it inks the entire page, which our bindery cannot do properly at any price: the paper buckles and ripples, and one pass of black is never black. Volumes
Past roughly 350 pages, one impossible brick becomes a matching set of volumes, numbered and split for you. Each volume is priced as its own book, and starting with volume one is allowed — the rest can join it any time.
Delivery
Door-to-door courier inside South Africa, shown as its own line before you pay — the book’s price is the book’s price. Ordering from anywhere else? The print-ready PDF is the same book, delivered instantly, with no courier at all.
The cheapest way to a real book
Buy the print-ready files for R349 and take them to any print shop yourself — every page is exact A4, A5, A6 or 21 cm square, with a wraparound cover sized to your spine. Questions people ask about the price
Can I order a dark-mode book?
Not one posted from us — and the reason is the paper rather than the price. On a dark book the wallpaper is the page, so ink has to cover every square centimetre of every sheet: the paper buckles and ripples under that much wet ink, and a single pass of black never comes out properly black. Presses that do it well print onto paper that is already black and lay the words down in opaque white ink, which is not something we can buy in South Africa. So dark comes on the print-ready file instead — the same book, every page, yours to hand to any printer with the right press. Books we print and post are light pages on white paper, and most people are surprised how well a dark chat reads that way.
How many pages will my chat be?
It depends on how you text — photos, voice notes and short rapid messages all change the count. As a rough guide, a year of steady chatting tends to land in the low hundreds of A5 pages. What happens if my chat is too long for one book?
Long chats are bound as a matching set of volumes of roughly 350 pages each, numbered and split for you. Each volume is priced as its own book, and you can order the whole set or start with volume one and add the rest later — the books match on the shelf.
Do photos and voice notes appear in the printed book?
Yes. Export your chat with media attached and photos, stickers and video stills are typeset onto the page; voice notes appear with their real durations under a waveform, the way they look on your phone.
Is there a cheaper way to get a printed book?
Several. Softcover costs less than hardcover, a shorter band costs less than a longer one, and you can start a long set with a single volume rather than buying the whole shelf at once. Cheapest of all: buy the print-ready PDF and hand it to a local print shop — any shop can bind it same-day.
