Should your chat book have dark pages?
Dark pages look like the chat you actually lived in — most people read WhatsApp in dark mode, and a light book can feel like somebody else’s conversation. The trade is real and physical: on a dark page the ink covers every square centimetre, and presses charge by coverage. It genuinely costs more to make, and it is shown as its own line rather than averaged into everyone else’s books.
Why dark costs more, physically
A light book inks the type and the bubbles onto white paper — most of the sheet is untouched. A dark book inks the whole sheet, edge to edge, on every page. That is several times the toner or ink per page, and on a 300-page book it adds up to a real number. Any printer you take a dark book to will charge you more for it too; a service that quotes the same price for both is averaging the cost across its light-book customers.

The show-through row matters more than people expect. Full-coverage dark on thin paper is visible from the other side — if you are printing locally, ask for 120gsm rather than 100.
How to choose
Choose dark if
You both read in dark mode and the light version looks wrong to you; the chat is photo-heavy, because images glow against a dark ground; or the book is an object as much as a document.
Choose light if
Somebody is going to read it end to end — light is easier on paper over an hour; the book is going to an older reader, where contrast and glare matter; or the budget is tight and you would rather spend the difference on hardcover.
Nobody can decide
