Exporting a WhatsApp group chat
Mechanically it is identical to any other chat: open the group, find Export chat, choose to include media. Three things are different — the file is much bigger, a group admin can switch exporting off for everyone, and the transcript now contains other people’s messages, which is worth a thought before you print thirty of them a book.
The steps
- Open the group and its info screeniPhone: tap the group name at the top. Android: ⋮ → More. The route is the same as a one-to-one — full detail for iPhone and Android.
- Export chat → Include mediaExpect this to take considerably longer than a one-to-one. Groups accumulate media fast, and a busy family group can produce a multi-gigabyte archive.
- Save to Files or DriveNot to another chat. A group export is frequently too large for a messaging app to carry.
- Expect to be truncatedGroups hit the 10,000-message media cap far sooner than couples do, because everyone is talking. Check where your file starts.
What a group export looks like inside
| One-to-one chat | Group chat | |
|---|---|---|
| Sender on every line | Two names, alternating | Every participant, by saved contact name |
| People who left | n/a | System lines: “X left”, “Y was added”, “Z changed the subject to…” |
| Unsaved numbers | Rare | Common — they appear as +27 82 … rather than a name |
| Typical size with media | Tens to hundreds of MB | Often gigabytes |
| Message cap reached | After a few years | Often within months |
Those system lines are part of the story of a group, not noise — “Amara added Theo” is where a friendship starts. They are kept.
How a group reads as a book
Names in their WhatsApp colours
Each participant keeps the colour the app gave them, so you can follow who is speaking across a page without reading every name — exactly how you read the group on your phone.
Avatars beside each run
A profile photo sits beside a person’s first message in each run rather than on every bubble. On a printed page, repeating it forty times would be unreadable.
Longer than you think
Groups are the longest books we make. Past roughly 350 pages a chat becomes a matching numbered set of volumes, because a single brick that thick will not open flat.
A genuinely good leaving present
The group chat is the friendship, and everybody has one that is about to go quiet — a colleague leaving, a house breaking up, a tour ending. There is a whole guide on that: the going-away gift.
The bit nobody else will mention
A group export is not only yours. It contains what thirty other people wrote when they thought they were talking to thirty people, not to a bound object on somebody’s shelf. Nobody needs your permission to print their own copy of a chat they were in — but telling the group you are making it is both good manners and, usually, the moment three of them ask for a copy too. If some of it should not be in print, say so before it prints rather than after; you can read the whole thing free first, which is precisely what that preview is for.
Questions people actually ask
Can I export a group I'm not an admin of?
Yes, in the normal case — exporting is available to every participant. The exception is when an admin has enabled Advanced Chat Privacy for the group, which removes the option for everyone including themselves.
Will other people know I exported the group?
No. Exporting is silent and leaves no trace in the conversation. That is a reason to tell them yourself rather than a reason not to.
Do people who left the group still appear?
Yes. Their messages stay in the history and stay in the export, and the system lines recording their arrival and departure are kept too.
Why do some people show as phone numbers instead of names?
Because you never saved them as contacts. The export writes whatever your phone knows. Saving the contact before you export fixes it for future exports and makes for a much better-looking book.
How long is a group chat as a printed book?
Longer than a couple's, usually by a lot. Past roughly 350 pages it is split into matching numbered volumes so each one opens flat. The free studio counts your exact pages before you pay anything.
