“Export chat” has disappeared from my WhatsApp menu
Nine times out of ten, somebody in the chat has switched on Advanced Chat Privacy — a setting WhatsApp added in 2025 that removes Export chat from the menu for everyone in that conversation, not just the person who turned it on. Nothing is broken on your phone. Ask them to turn it off in that chat’s settings and the option comes straight back.
What Advanced Chat Privacy actually does
It is a per-chat lock, not an account setting. In a one-to-one chat either participant can switch it on; in a group, only an admin can. Once it is on, WhatsApp stops the conversation leaving the app: media no longer saves automatically to your gallery, Meta AI cannot be asked about the chat, and the Export chat item is removed from the menu — for every person in the conversation, including the one who enabled it.
That last part is what confuses people. You did not do anything. You are not being punished. Someone at the other end ticked a privacy box, quite possibly months ago and for a completely unrelated reason, and the side-effect is that neither of you can take a copy of your own conversation.
Three other things that hide the button
You are looking in the wrong menu
On Android it is ⋮ → More → Export chat — two levels down, and the first menu does not hint that it exists. On iPhone you have to open the contact or group name at the top and scroll to the bottom. Walk through it properly for Android or iPhone.
A very old app version
Export has been in WhatsApp for years, but menu positions moved more than once. If your app has not updated in a long time, the item may simply be somewhere else. Update, then look again.
WhatsApp Business or a linked device
WhatsApp Web and Desktop have never had Export chat — it is a phone-only feature. If you are looking at a browser tab, that is why. Pick up the handset.
How to get the option back
You cannot switch this off from your side if the other person enabled it. This is the message to send, and the steps to send them:
- Confirm it is the privacy lock, not the menuOpen a different chat and look for Export chat there. If it is present in other conversations and absent in this one, it is Advanced Chat Privacy — the setting is per-chat, so it can only ever go missing from one conversation at a time.
- Ask them to open the chat with youTap your name at the top of the conversation to open the chat’s settings.
- Advanced chat privacy → offIt sits with the other per-chat privacy controls. In a group this is under the group settings and only an admin will see it — if you are not an admin, you need to ask one.
- Reopen the chat on your phoneThe menu item returns immediately; you do not need to restart WhatsApp. Then export with media and you are away.

Note the last row: a locked chat still goes into your normal WhatsApp backup. A backup is not an export, though — it restores into WhatsApp and cannot be opened, read or printed on its own. Do not mistake having a backup for having a copy.
Questions people actually ask
Can I turn off Advanced Chat Privacy from my side?
Only if you are the one who turned it on. In a one-to-one chat either person can enable it, and only that person can disable it. In a group, only admins have the control. If someone else enabled it, the only route is to ask them.
Does it apply to all my chats or just one?
Just one. It is set per conversation. That is the quickest way to diagnose it: if Export chat is present in your other chats and missing in this one, the setting is on for this one.
Will my old export still work if they turn it on later?
Yes. A .txt or .zip you already downloaded is a file on your device and stays yours. The setting only stops new exports being made.
Why can't I find Export chat on WhatsApp Web?
It has never been there. Exporting is a phone feature on both iPhone and Android; WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps do not offer it at all. Nothing has been removed — go to the handset.
I found it, but the export is missing most of my messages.
That is a different limit, not a privacy setting. WhatsApp caps an export at 40,000 messages without media, or 10,000 with media attached, counting backwards from the most recent. There is a guide on this site about exporting a chat that is longer than the cap.
